Guard / Security Officer

The Port of Lake Charles is seeking candidates for the position of Guard.  This is a full-time state Civil Service position that includes benefits.  No test is required.

The starting salary is $12.84 per hour.

This position is under the general supervision of the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District’s (Port of Lake Charles) Harbor Police Lieutenant and involves manning fixed guard posts, assuring access control, detection and prevention of threats to Port property and personnel, and compliance with Federal regulations pertaining to Homeland Security, the Port’s Tariff, and the goals and objectives of the Harbor Police & Security Department.

Primary functions include: manning access gates, checking credentials for entry, documenting visitors, conducting vehicle and personnel screenings, and patrolling the facility.

High School Diploma or GED must be provided.  It is preferred that the candidate possess basic abilities and experience with Microsoft  Word, Excel and Outlook and experience in the writing and preparation of basic reports.  Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.  Prior military or security experience preferred.  Also prefer six (6) months experience in the types of duties outlined above or acceptable equivalent experience.  Must be available to work 12 hour rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays.  The successful candidate must be willing to undergo and pass a complete, extensive personnel and criminal background investigation, as well as pass a physical exam, which includes drug screening.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.  Must possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers’ Identification Credential (TWIC) in accordance with 33CFR101.514 (TWIC Requirement).

Physical abilities such as standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting 30 pounds or more, stooping, bending, work outdoors in all types of weather and work around waterfront are required in order to fulfill the duties of this position.
