Guard / Security Officer

The Port of Lake Charles is seeking candidates for the position of Guard.  This is a full-time state Civil Service position that includes benefits.  No test is required.

The starting salary is $10.82 per hour. 

This position is under the general supervision of the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District’s (Port of Lake Charles) Harbor Police Lieutenant and involves manning fixed guard posts, assuring access control, detection and prevention of threats to Port property and personnel, and compliance with the goals and objectives of the Harbor Police & Security Department.

Primary functions include: monitoring closed circuit television in the command center, patrolling grounds, documenting visitors, checking credentials for entry and dispatching calls.

High School Diploma or GED must be provided.  It is preferred that the candidate possess basic abilities and experience with Microsoft  Word, Excel and Outlook and experience in the writing and preparation of basic reports.  Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.  Prior military or security experience preferred.  Also prefer six (6) months experience in the types of duties outlined above or acceptable equivalent experience.  Must be available to work 12 hour rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays.  The successful candidate must be willing to undergo and pass a complete, extensive personnel and criminal background investigation, as well as pass a physical exam, which includes drug screening.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.  Must possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers’ Identification Credential (TWIC) in accordance with 33CFR101.514 (TWIC Requirement). 

Physical abilities such as standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting 30 pounds or more, stooping, bending, work outdoors in all types of weather and work around waterfront are required in order to fulfill the duties of this position.

Police Officer

The Port of Lake Charles is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer for its Harbor Police Department.  This is a full-time state Civil Service position which includes benefits. 

Applicants must possess a score for the Louisiana State Civil Service 9500-LEAPS Test to be considered for hiring – no exemptions.  This test is distinct from municipal, parish, federal or other Civil Service exams.  Testing locations and times, may be found at https://jobs.civilservice.louisiana.gov under “Testing Information.”

The position is in a Career Progression Group and may be filled at the entry or second level (Police Officer 1-A or 2-A), depending upon experience. 

Starting Salary for Police Officer 1 – A is $14.54 per hour and for Police Officer 2 – A is $15.56 per hour.  Police Officers of the Harbor Police Department are eligible for State Supplemental Pay ($500 per month), when qualified.

For Police Officer 1 – A, no experience is required and for Police Officer 2 – A, one year of law enforcement experience is required.  College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

A TWIC card is required to work on Port premises.  A current P.O.S.T certification is preferred.  Candidates should possess good writing and interpersonal skills, the ability to understand written and verbal instructions, and possess basic computer knowledge.

Bulk Terminal Specialist

The Port of Lake Charles is seeking applicants for the position of Bulk Terminal Specialist for its bulk petroleum coke handling facility in Sulphur.  This a full-time state Civil Service positions which include benefits.

Entry level salary is $12.45 per hour; however, this is a training series (career progression group) with an opportunity for advancement over time.  Also, previous experience will be taken into consideration when determining hiring level and salary.

Duties include, but are not limited to, loading and unloading bulk cargo, operating mobile equipment and heavy machinery, general upkeep of the grounds and facilities and other manual labor. 

Position requires the ability to perform manual physical labor such as standing, stooping, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting 30 pounds or more; work outdoors in all types of weather; work around waterfront.

A valid driver’s license and good driving record are preferred.  Selected applicant will be required to pass a drug and alcohol screen.
